March 27 & 28, 2010
Set aside these dates for the inaugural Oakland Running Festival. There are several events, including the first full marathon in the City of Oakland in 25 years. The first race in the previous series of Oakland Marathons was in 1979; just two years after the running boom began. The pent-up demand for a marathon in the city resulted in the race being an immediate success. In the next few years we came to expect the marathon at the end of November. And, then one year it was… gone. Apparently the victim of its own success, it had gotten too big too soon, and overwhelmed the organizers.
That is not likely to happen this time. Gene Brtalik, a new Bay Area transplant, and Corrigan Sports Enterprises, an established sports and event marketing organization for which Gene is an event director, have designed a great, well organized race that promises to be around for a long time, showcasing Oakland and the runners of Northern California.
